CONNECT WITH
Rise Art is pleased to present Kinaesthesia: Art in Motion, the first exhibition in a series of exclusive online showcases.
Meeting people, speaking with them and learning about them are as important to his practice as drawing and painting are. Togetherness, not loneliness, is at the core of the artist’s work. It might seem surprising, then, that the drawings he first became known for tend to feature solitary, disembodied subjects. In these solo portraits, Makamo’s talent for capturing the emotional intensity and overwhelming sense of hope in his sitters is a matter of expression and movement.
For the artist’s first UK solo exhibition in more than five years, his characters are beginning to congregate. For the first time we are seeing them in situ, as members of a wider community. Alongside solitary, meditative characters, there are groups of laughing schoolchildren, busy street scenes and other displays of togetherness. This brings a new level of detail to Makamo’s world: the spaces that they occupy, the clothes that they wear, the company that they keep and the way that they look (or don’t look) at their companions all bring depth and complexity to his characters.
With these new contexts, the emotional intensity of Makamo’s work has not disappeared. Many of the faces in this exhibition - their owners engaged in social activities - contain all the emotional intensity of his early drawings. Momentarily these faces hover above their surroundings, their innermost essences exposed. They are both members of social groups and wider contexts and overwhelmingly individual. They are alone, together.
Rise Art invited artists to explore the dynamic theme of Kinaesthesia, the ability to sense bodily movement, for our inaugural online exhibition. Discover how artists have turned the essence of motion into sites for artistic practice, creating new dialogues around the embodiment of space and the potential for art to not just capture but transmit sensation.
This exhibition promises to offer a compelling exploration on how movement can inspire and shape artistic expression, inviting all to engage with and reflect on the dynamic interplay between body and art and the fluidity of interpretation.

REMI DELAPLACE
Remi Delaplace challenges representations of embodiment and explores how sensorimotor experiences influence our way of thinking. Through abstract compositions, the artist examines gravitation, trajectory, and levitation, integrating insights from various movement modalities. His paintings create spatial narratives that evoke the dynamics of bodies and objects in space, playing with proximity, distance, and the anticipation of events.

EMILIE MOYSSON
Videographer and photographer Emilie Moysson seeks out those elusive moments when magic pierces through the mundane, capturing scenes that resonate with a profound and untouched perspective. Her unique artistic vision emerges most vividly during editing, where she transforms moving images into photographs that preserve the essence of captured movement. This innovative approach allows Moysson to convey the fluidity and dynamism inherent in her storytelling.
ZHOU YIYAN
Zhou Yiyan is a multi-disciplinary artist whose creations range from delicate sculptures of porcelain, metal, and clay, to intricate ink drawings on paper. Yiyan views the creative process as an entangled dance, where artist and artwork shape each other, capturing fleeting moments of pure creation. There is a rawness to her work, a feature that underscores the relationship between humanity, nature, and modern society, and compels observers to imagine a kinder world where weakness becomes strength and differences complement each other.

CENK DÜZYOL
Contemporary visual storyteller Cenk Düzyol explores the relationship between humanity and technology, and the effects of technology and modernization on society. His brightly coloured works lean towards caricature, often portraying characters in tricky, dystopian situations. Animated with a touch of irony and comedic unease, his figurative compositions nevertheless contain glimmers of hope, humour, and optimism.

MANFRED HELLWEGER
Manfred Hellweger questions the meaning and value of existence, the world, and humanity through his sculptures crafted primarily from wood and metal. He employs simple shapes such as cubes, strips, and boards, connected with nails or shaped tubes, to create figurative works that taper towards the base. These sculptures evoke a sense of vertical dissolution, symbolising the perpetual change of our time. Each piece embodies Hellweger's credo, "less of everything" rather than more, reflecting a philosophy of simplicity and depth that extends beyond art.

PHILIPPE MARLATS
Influenced by 20th-century figurative and abstract expressionists, Philippe Marlats delves into two intertwined themes: The Fall of Man and the representation of Woman as Nature. His work delves into existential questions surrounding humanity's place in a crisis-ridden world, juxtaposing the turmoil of a doctrinal loss of innocence with serene depictions of female nudes embodying the harmonious forces of nature.
CLAIRE CANSICK
Claire Cansick interprets nature's dynamism, unpredictability, and untamed beauty through highly stylised oil and charcoal paintings. Beginning with photographic references, Cansick then allows the paint to take charge, responding intuitively to colours and brushstrokes. This process leads the painted elements to overshadow the original subject matter, allowing instinct to take over the completion of each piece.

NICHOLAS STEDMAN
Painter Nicholas Stedman takes a personal approach to the human body, marking the contradictory tensions - metaphysical and emotional - between flight and fall. Figures soar or sink in a broken universe, arranged like hieroglyphs tumbling through abstract plains. Stedman's orbital, pirouetting compositions refer to our perception of the human condition as highly volatile, the beauty of dance, and the artist's scientific background.

Information architect Miguel Ripoll delves into the creative realm of AI and algorithms. Since 2021, Ripoll has blended human-led AI adversarial dialogue with custom datasets of texts and images, merging them with hand-crafted digital media. ISABELLE BECKER
The works of Isabelle Becker embody a profound exploration of human expression. Inspired by the spontaneity of everyday life, Becker transforms coffee stains and other chance marks into imaginative drawings, freeing herself from "blank page anxiety." She then expands these ideas onto larger surfaces and mediums, creating chaotic yet harmonious compositions of faces and figures across sculpture, canvas, and paper. Her fascination with the human form drives her exploration, seeking to reveal the hidden depths behind outward appearances.
